Your Questions about Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnotherapy?
A talking therapy which utilises hypnosis. It really is that easy!
So what is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is entirely voluntary. When you allow yourself to be hypnotised you will focus your conscious mind on the sound of my voice. During this time I will talk directly to your powerful subconscious mind, which has the foundations of all your emotions, and assist you to make the changes you desire.
Is it dangerous and will I lose control?
The answer to both questions is an emphatic “No”. Daydreaming is often similar to hypnosis and we all enter that light hypnosis-like state from time to time. You will be in a deep state of relaxation and comfort. You will remain in control at all times. It is not possible to get stuck in hypnosis.
Am I likely to tell you embarrassing things or behave stupidly while I'm hypnotised?
Certainly not. I use hypnotherapy to help you regain control over your life in the manner that you wish. Your subconscious mind always protects you – if you were asked to do anything contrary to your belief system it would reject the suggestion and you would probably come out of the hypnotic state. I am a member of the Hypnotherapy Society and bound by their code of Ethics; this assures you of complete confidentiality and my duty to respect your privacy and dignity.
I've heard hypnotists on the TV tell people to “Sleep Now”. Will I be asleep?
No, although like most clients you will be very relaxed you will be very aware of what is happening. You will be focussing “complete concentration on a single thought”. You can open your eyes at any time during a session but you are more likely to report a deep feeling of relaxation and comfort.
How is hypnotherapy different to other approaches?
Your emotions and your behaviours lie rooted in your subconscious mind. Have you ever tried conscious willower to change something or give something up, only to fail? That is like pulling leaves of a weed only to see it grow again. You need to get to the roots – the subconscious. Hypnotherapy will help you to do this.
What is the attitude of the medical profession?
Hypnosis has been used effectively by medics for centuries. Recently there has been a blossoming of sophistication in the understanding of the mind and body interaction. Many (but not all) GP's positively support the use of hypnotherapy to achieve change.
